Hillsborough River State Park is home to a rich variety of wildlife, offering guests a chance to encounter the natural wonders of Florida in their native habitat. From white tailed deer and playful otters to wild turkeys, turtles, and the iconic American alligator, the park’s trails, riverbanks, and wetlands are alive with movement and sound. Birdwatchers will enjoy sightings of hawks, herons, owls, and colorful songbirds, while butterflies, frogs, and native fish add to the diversity. As you explore, remember that all wildlife is protected and should be observed from a safe distance never feed, touch, or approach animals. For your safety and theirs, stay on marked trails, supervise children closely near the water, and always respect posted signs and ranger guidance.

Glimps of the Wild Life

Reptiles

While alligators are the park’s most famous residents, they share this vibrant ecosystem with a variety of other fascinating reptiles and amphibians. The waterways are home to several turtle species, including the Florida Redbelly, Peninsula Cooter, and the amusingly named Chicken Turtle. On land, keep an eye out for the elusive Mud Turtle and the iconic Gopher Tortoise an essential keystone species whose burrows provide shelter for more than 200 other animals.

Mammals

Hillsborough River State Park is home to a variety of fascinating mammals, many of which can be spotted with a bit of patience and a keen eye. Along the trails and riverbanks, you might catch glimpses of Marsh Rabbits darting through the underbrush or the striking Sherman’s Fox Squirrel larger and more colorful than the average tree squirrel. Bobcats, though elusive, silently roam the park’s wooded areas, and playful River Otters can occasionally be seen gliding through the water or sunbathing along the river’s edge.

As the sun sets in the summer months, look to the sky for the Seminole Bat swooping through the air in search of insects. If you're camping beneath the oaks, listen closely high above, the soft, high-pitched squeaks of Southern Flying Squirrels might signal their presence as they glide from branch to branch under cover of night.

Feathered Friends

A haven for birdwatchers, offering a diverse array of species throughout the year. Some birds are permanent residents, while others migrate through during the winter months, making every season an opportunity to spot something unique. Visitors may encounter Green Herons, Night Herons, Northern Bobwhites, American Woodcocks, Limpkins, Barred Owls, Nighthawks, and charismatic woodpeckers like the Downy and Red bellied. Loggerhead Shrikes also make appearances, known for their unusual hunting habits. In the cooler months, the park comes alive with colorful warblers, including the Common Yellowthroat, Black-and-white Warbler, Palm Warbler, Pine Warbler, Yellow rumped Warbler, and Northern Parula. Whether you're hiking, relaxing at your campsite, or paddling the river, the birdlife adds a lively soundtrack and vibrant presence to every visit.
